The Future of the Hays House
The Hays House volunteers and the Historical Society of Harford County Committee
wish to preserve the Hays House Museum and enhance its position as a unique venue
for making local and regional 18th and 19th century history come alive.
- A new furnace was installed in the Fall of 1999 and air conditioning was added.
- The 1814 kitchen addition was reconstructed, which greatly enhances
our ability to describe life around 1788-1825
and permits demonstrations of period cooking.
The structure was completed in October of 2001.
- The kitchen addition allowed the installation of a handicapped-accessible
rest room, a gift shop in the basement, and a small kitchenette to be used
for special events, teas, and private gatherings.
- The dining room, parlor, entry way, and upstairs middle bedroom
walls were repaired and painted.
- Moveable walls were placed on either side of the parlor hearth to conceal
modern pipes and ductwork.
- Major clothing exhibits conceived, organized, and staged by volunteers
showcase the museum as well as the Society’s acquisitions.
- A children’s hands-on-history room was created from a small upstairs alcove.
- The Harford County Cultural Arts Board enthusiastically supports special
programming and events, and the clothing displays.
- Volunteers continue to think of outreach programs, events, and activities that
make history come alive and assure that the Hays House Museum has a future.

where children can freely “play” with history.
