SUMMARY:The Arts in Harford - Bob Willenbrink
DESCRIPTION:Bob Willenbrink is the Executive Director of the Maryland Center for the Arts in Harford County (MDCFA). An accomplished guitarist and singer\, his professional background includes stints as a theater director\, a professor\, and a Dean. Join us at this virtual presentation to learn more about the exciting expansion of the arts in Harford. \nIn 2020\, just as the COVID pandemic hit\, Bob came to the county to lead the MDCFA. The annual Bluegrass festival continues to be a major success drawing people from across the country. Plans call for the expansion of this event to include Celtic\, folk\, and blues. Likewise\, the Plein Air Art Festival grows each year drawing submissions from talented artists and leading to displays in the Bel Air Armory. With Bob’s leadership\, the county is experiencing an increased interest in the arts and the development of a vibrant arts scene.

SUMMARY:In Support of Women: An Interview with Joan Hodous
DESCRIPTION:Joan Hodous\, author\, activist\, and founder of the Harford County Commission for Women will be our guest at a virtual presentation on Tuesday\, October 10th at 12:30 pm. This promises to be an entertaining\, and for some\, an eye-opening program. \nWe forget how much has changed since the seventies in the county and the country. This is your chance to relive\, or possibly learn for the first time\, the challenges\, successes\, and failures of the women’s movement in Harford County. Ms. Hodous stepped forward to lead the state-mandated Commission\, accepting incredible challenges that few of us would recognize today. Remember this was a time when women needed their father or husband to approve their applications for a bank account and a credit card. Assistance programs for women were essentially non-existent. Employment opportunities were specifically divided into male or female in newspaper advertisements. Joan attacked these issues with determination and humor\, resulting in major changes in the county\, changes we can all be grateful for today.

SUMMARY:The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford - Guest Speaker Walter Holloway
DESCRIPTION:The MA & PA Railroad stretched between Baltimore at North Avenue & Howard Streets\, onto Towson\, through Long Green Valley into Harford County. It ended at Market Street in York\, Pennsylvania. Even by the day’s standards\, it passed through some of the East Coast’s most wooded\, curvaceous\, and beautiful scenery. \nThe MA & PA Railroad was an important part of life in Harford County\, especially for the towns between Baltimore and York. The early morning run from Harford County to Baltimore City carried so much milk that locals called it “The Milky Way.” For the owners of the County’s many canneries\, quarries\, and mines\, the railroad was an essential part of their livelihood. The trains chugged through 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of only 15 – 20 miles per hour because of the route’s many grade changes and curves. At the turn of the twentieth century\, the railroad trip from Baltimore City to Sharon (north of Forest Hill) took about 1 ¾ hours. \nIn addition to mail and all kinds of Harford County products\, the MA & PA also carried people—travelers\, shoppers\, theatergoers\, and relatives. They welcomed the screeching whistles and billowing steam clouds of the MA & PA Railroad as a way to see what lay beyond their hometowns. Like other railroads of the time\, the MA & PA began a slow decline as buses\, trucks\, and Model Ts began to carry people and products between Baltimore and Bel Air on Rt. 1. \nJoin Ma & Pa expert Walt Holloway as he shares his photographs and stories of the heyday of the Ma & Pa.  The fee is $15. \nPurchase Tickets

SUMMARY:[SOLD OUT] America 250 Speakers Series: Equestrian Sport in Harford
DESCRIPTION:This event is sold out and at capacity\, tickets will not be sold at the door. \nJoin us at the Harford History Center for a talk and book signing featuring Josh Pons\, a third-generation horseman and owner of Country Life Farm\, as he relates the stories behind his newest book\, Letters from Country Life: Adolphe Pons\, Man o’ War\, and the Founding of Maryland’s Oldest Thoroughbred Farm. \nIn 2016\, in the basement of his farmhouse\, Josh Pons discovered thousands of letters from his grandfather’s life in the Thoroughbred horse business. The son of a French cook who came to New York City in 1894\, Adolphe Pons got his start working in the Fifth Avenue mansion of Gilded Age banker August Belmont II. Adolphe became his personal secretary and later played a major role in Belmont’s breeding and sale of the most famous horse in history: Man o’ War. During the Great Depression\, Adolphe left New York and bought a 100-acre horse farm in Maryland\, naming it Country Life after the Long Island Railroad station stop nearest his Garden City home. \nIn serial form\, Josh Pons expands on the column he wrote for the leading horse publication The BloodHorse\, inviting readers to once more step into the attic garret alongside him as he recovers long-lost voices speaking out of letters\, telegrams\, and photos. Upon the attic stage appear Gilded Age tycoons from whom the author’s grandfather bought and sold horses against the backdrop of World War I\, the Great Depression\, and World War II. As Josh draws from the farmhouse’s rich archive\, he chronicles his grandfather’s life and times and shares his own candid reflections. The result is a fascinating and fresh look at the Golden Age of Horse Racing and how the past influences our present. \nThis is a unique opportunity to explore Harford County’s connection to horse breeding\, Maryland’s role in the sport of horse racing\, and the Pons family’s legacy in Maryland’s equestrian history. \nWine will be available at this event. \nTicket Prices: $25 ($15 for HSHC Members) \nThis event is sold out and at capacity\, tickets will not be sold at the door.

Ms. White began her career performing as an 1840s kitchen maid at Rose Hill Mansion in the Finger Lakes region of New York. She served as the Education Curator at the 18th-century Square House Museum in Westchester County\, New York\, and often cooked on the tavern’s 18th-century hearth. In 2006\, she began working in Maryland as the Education Director and Foodways Consultant at the 1801 Riversdale House Museum\, and she served as the consultant for the restoration of the 18th-century kitchen at Annapolis’ William Paca House. She has appeared on numerous TV shows on CBS\, MPT\, and PBS\, and is the author of Cooking Maryland’s Way: Voices of a Diverse Cuisine. \nMs. White’s presentation offers a unique opportunity to learn about Maryland’s contributions to American cuisine and to pick up some cooking tips.
